ABSTRACT.This paper presents a review of information on the management of pike (Esox lucius L.) in Polish waters. The size of commercial and recreational catches of this species and the amounts of restocking material released were both estimated for recent years. Issues associated with the pressure put on pike by poaching and the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo L.) are also discussed. Particular attention is paid to the practical aspects of catching spawners, the quantity of which did not exceed 23% of the total weight of pike caught in Poland in 2014, and to issues of protecting pike spawning, the justification for performing restocking, practical possibilities for conducting in vivo pike reproduction, and introducing new biotechnologies in the reproduction of the species. The most important aspect of the sustainable management of the pike population is education, but not only of those associated with fisheries management professionally, but also the public in general and recreational fishers in particular.
Key words: pike, sustainable management, fisheries catches and restocking, recreational fisheries and poaching pressure, controlled pike reproduction
