ABSTRACT. This paper describes the problems created by bottom sediments in rearing ponds with regard to safeguarding fish health, water management, and environmental threats. In an effort to resolve these problems, a dredger was constructed to remove bottom sediments from fish ponds. Initial investigations of the dredger confirmed that the design principles were good concerning the efficiency of removing sediments with high concentrations of solid mineral and organic origin. The sediments extracted were subjected to preliminary examinations, and the results revealed they had substantial fertilizer properties. This creates an opportunity to produce high quality organic fertilizers that have a market price of 1 to 2 pln per dm3. Introducing these fertilizers onto the market would decrease significantly the costs of bottom sediment extraction.
Key words: bottom sediments, extraction, dredger, transforming into fertilizer
